een talks formula one

After the raging success of my Ten Coolest Champions of all time, I’m gonna chuck together another list of 10 cool drivers. But this time, in my opinion, the 10 best Formula One drivers never to win a World Championship.

I’m sure there are many great drivers I have forgotten, and some of my own favourites who I admire dearly but think weren’t quite as quick as some of the blokes on this list. Picking just 10 is hard, so lay off any criticism. But at the same time, any feedback would be mint.

Starting with 10. Jacky Ickx

Jacky is hands down one of the greatest drivers in motorsports history, and held the record for most wins at Le Mans for yonks. Due to his wins at Le Mans, he is still held in a high regard. He finished second in the championship in 69 and 70 for Brabham and Ferrari respectively, and despite multiple poles and fastest laps in 71 and 72 he finishes fourth in both seasons due to the unreliability of the Ferrari 312.

Cracking driver and a hero of the Scuderia during the era, the Belgium driver got his due with success at Le Mans so he only winds up 10th.

A first lap crash between Jackie Oliver and Jacky Ickx looks a lot worse than it was. Although Ickx was hospitalised with burns, he made a full recovery and was racing at the next Grand Prix at Monaco.
1970 Spanish Grand Prix, Jarama.

Probably the best ad ever made. Love the Jacky Ickx helmet on the 312.

A nice bunch of lads there. I feel bad for not recognising the middle helmet, but fairly sure it is Ickx up front and Cevert at the back.

1970-1976 Lotus 72
there was a time, when regulations didn’t change every year. So F1 teams keep developing the same car for years…

The revolutionary wedge shape of the Lotus 72 gave it massive longevity and won Chapman and co. two drivers titles at the hands of the late Jochen Rindt and a pair of Brazilian sideburns nicknamed “Emmo”, as well as three constructors titles.
Other famous names to have driven the Lotus 72 include Super Swede Ronnie Peterson, British driver John Watson and Belgian Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx.
