The McLaren MP4-20, McLaren’s title challenging car from 2005, is unjustly remembered as being unreliable due to a pair of untimely car failures whilst Kimi Raikkonen was leading the San Marino and German Grand Prix, costing a critical 20 points which made all the difference in the World Championship. The only other retirement, a blown suspension due to a burgeoning flat spot caused by the short lived no-tyre-stops rule, also cost Raikkonen another 10 points, more bad luck but the flat spot was caused by Kimi whilst trying to lap the Sauber of Jacques Villeneuve.
The car was very fast, and although less reliable than the all-conquering Ferrari of years past and 2005 title winning Renault of Fernando Alonso, proved to be McLaren’s most reliable car in years, and despite not winning either the driver’s or constructor’s titles, it was voted the Autosport Racing Car Of The Year, and is the last time a Formula One car that did not score the most amount of points won the award (the 2007 McLaren MP4-22 won the award, but despite scoring the most points was disqualified from the Constructor’s championship due to the “Spy-gate” saga).
