Eddie leads Mika, Hockenheim.
Mika Salo was trailing reigning champion and fellow Finn Mika Hakkinen before a tyre failure gave the Ferrari stand-in the lead. Instead of getting what would have been his only ever race win, Salo moved over towards the end of the race to give teammate Eddie Irvine, who was the de facto team leader with Michael out injured, the race victory and pivotal 10 points in the title race.
In a show of appreciation, Eddie gave Mika the winner’s trophy after the race.
