After leaving Lotus at the end of his unsuccessful title defence in 1979, Mario would race for Italian team Alfa Romeo, powered by the Autodelta V12s. A fourth place on the pairing’s debut in the US Grand Prix West held promise, but those would go on to be Mario’s only points of the season. This would be the legendary Italian-American’s last full season in Formula One, racing as a stand-in for Williams and then later Ferrari the following season.
